donnaMIGRANT WOMEN

Three festivals for intercultural dialogue

The Project MIGRANT WOMEN was an idea of the coordinator ilCAntinonearte Teatri in Montepulciano, Siena province; it then was developed with the collaboration of three European coorganisers: Motus (Siena, Italy), Bollywood Pictures (Lisbon, Portugal), Zecora Ura Theatre (London, UK).

The Issues
Immigration, integration, intercultural dialogue between a native culture and a different environment. Our choice was to focus on a feminine point of view: a migrant woman's particular perspective of the world in her double condition of minority, in the native culture and in the new country's costumes both as a woman and as a migrant.

These are the questions: what happens when one's culture necessarily confronts a different one? What happens when one culture merges into the other and when one culture welcomes another? What changes? What becomes imposed or lost or received? What is hidden behind reciprocal prejudices? And what does it mean to be a "migrant woman"?
The Events
Three European Festivals which include:two theatre performances, a dance performance, a documentary film, as well as a conference, three round tables and many different events associated with the project. The MATER FESTIVAL between Montepulciano and Siena in Italy, the MIGRANT DAYS LISBOA in Portugal and the MIGRANT DAYS LONDON in the United Kingdom. The Migrant Women Project is using art dialogue and confrontation as a means to analyse its issues.

Objectives
To encourage intercultural dialogue and the trans-national mobility of artists and works of art and to encourage the mobility of the people working for the project in order to deepen their understanding of other national realities.
The Migrant Women Project considers the local territories, where the project began, as important as the European horizon. A local reality is the place where we can discover and analyse the customs and stereotypes related to "migrant women". We can then compare them with other points of view existing in different European cultures.

The Project's main sponsors
The European Commission through the Culture Program 2007-2013 (Strand.1.2.1 Cooperational Actions), the Town of Montepulciano and the City of Siena, Siena Province. The Project is waiting for the Tuscan Region patronage and for the high patronage of the President of the Italian Republic.
