MATER FESTIVAL ilCAntinonearte Teatri of Montepulciano and San Girolamo Estate
ilCAntinonearte Teatri is in the ex-depository of San Girolamo Estate, a building located between Porta a Prato and the strong city wall Sangallo that encloses Montepulciano. It is inside of a big block in the historical center. The original unit was built in XIII Century - the first stone was layed probably in 1206. It was as a convent able to host up to 200 nuns and it has been active until the end of XVIII Century. After the suppression of the holy orders by the Lorenas, the estate was used for different activities. In the XIX Century it became a prestigious private school for women ("Conservatorio").
The theatre origin is linked to the Accademia degli Intrigati's will to realiste, in 1790, a new theatre. Leonardo De Vegni's project was considered too expensive. In 1793 the project of Giuseppe Valentini, archytect from Prato, was approved and in 1796 the new theatre was completed having used the rooms of Monte Pio, under Montepulciano's Dome. The theatre room, with an oval hall and a spacious entrance, was structured in a semicircle with 72 balconies in four levels. After some minor changes, in 1870 the theatre was restored again following a more contemporary style. In 1880 Augusto Corbi renewed the theatre collaborating with the painter Rotellini and the decorator Angelo Franci.
Located at the entrance of Boccheggiano, the mining center of the Town of Montieri, the building was constructed by Montecatini Society in 1927 as a recreational center for its employees. The structure presents an interesting design , typical of the modern architecture of the fascist era, which represents an eagle with open wings. The core structure design is interesting as the facade leads into the main longitudinal axis which is the theatre space. On the sides of the main theatre space there are rooms reserved for social life.
The theatre, originally owned by the Solmine Company, was managed by the Association Pro Loco of Boccheggiano up to the end of 1980. Afterwards it became property of the Town and was restored in 1994/95 by the engineer Faccendi.
